For over 16 years, Kevin McGurk has served as a Deputy Public Defender. He has dedicated his career to public service, ensuring that indigent defendants are guaranteed their constitutional rights. Kevin has conducted over fifty jury trials, ranging from misdemeanors to complex, high profile murder cases. For the last twelve years, Kevin has been exclusively representing clients in serious felony matters. He also has significant experience representing clients in collaborative courts, such as Mental Health Court, Drug Court, and various Diversion Courts.
Spending the better part of two decades in a courtroom, Kevin has seen first-hand how critical a judge’s role is in our justice system. One erroneous ruling can dramatically alter the course of a case and seriously impact numerous lives. The responsibility is enormous. The weighty duties of a judge must be carried out by someone who is truly unbiased, has an excellent grasp on the law, and has the experience and compassion necessary to deliver justice. Should Kevin be elected as a Superior Court Judge, he will strive every day to emulate these characteristics.
Born in Montana and raised primarily in Colorado, Kevin received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Colorado at Boulder in Political Science. After graduation, he indulged his passion for travel and moved to Thailand to teach English. Following his time in South East Asia, Kevin attended the Maurer School of Law at Indiana University, Bloomington. Upon receiving his J.D., Kevin moved to Southern California to be close to family and begin a career in public service. Kevin promptly joined the Los Angeles County Public Defender’s Office where he zealously advocates for his clients every day.
Outside of the office Kevin enjoys traveling, sports and coaching T-ball through Long Beach Little League. Kevin lives in Long Beach with his wife, who is also a Deputy Public Defender in the Juvenile Division, and his two young daughters.
